The Exchange has held five names over the course of its 134-year history: the Butter and Cheese Exchange; the American Exchange; the Butter, Cheese, and Egg Exchange; the New York Mercantile Exchange; and, after converting to a for-profit membership structure in 2000, the New York Mercantile Exchange, Inc.

The NYMEX Charitable Foundation was established in 1989 to coordinate the philanthropic efforts of the New York Mercantile Exchange. Through a dedicated committee, the Foundation brings together members and staff of the Exchange who volunteer their time and positive intention to fund and serve the underprivileged, elderly and environment. The Children in Need Fund supports children’s causes and provides opportunities for a better future.
